Shame of the Pacific

I was reading an article in the Wall Street Journal and came across an article that just shocked me. Litter in the ocean is a problem, but I had no idea of the scope of the problem.
There is a flotilla of floating plastic debris off the coast of California that is conservativelyestimated to be twice the size of Texas. Other estimates say the vast expanse of litter swept together by ocean currents could be as large as the the entire United States.
Oddly they are having trouble measuring just how bit it really is, but even if it is only twice the size of Texas that is just horrible. Ever driven across Texas? I have only driven apart part of it and I was amazed at its size. – and I’m from Montana!
How on earth do we even clean up something that big and how do we stop it from getting bigger? What if the current changed and it ends up trashing the entire West Coast?
